YSL Black Opium vs Grandeur Optimum Noir: Is the Dupe Really Worth It?

If you've been eyeing Grandeur Optimum Noir, chances are you've also heard people calling it a dupe for the iconic YSL Black Opium. As someone who's been wearing Black Opium for years now, I was naturally curious. I had to know if a perfume at a much ‘friendlier’ price could really come close to one of my all-time favourites. 

So after wearing both for quite some time, here's my take.

First impressions

The first spray honestly caught me off guard.

Grandeur Optimum Noir smells very similar to YSL Black Opium. If someone walked past your wearing either one, there's a good chance you wouldn't immediately know which perfume it was. Both have that warm, sweet, slightly addictive scent profile that's easy to wear during the day and even better at night. They're feminine, cozy, and have that little touch of mystery without feeling too heavy.

If we're talking purely about the scent itself, Grandeur did a really impressive job.

The notes

On paper, it's easy to see why people compare them.

Both perfumes lean into notes like coffee, vanilla, white florals, and a hint of fruitiness. That signature sweet coffee-vanilla combination is what makes Black Opium so recognisable, and Grandeur definitely takes inspiration from it.

But here's the thing. Perfume isn't just about having the same notes listed on the box. It's also about how those notes are blended together.

After wearing Black Opium for years, I can tell there's still something more refined about it. The transition from the opening to the dry down feels smoother, the scent has more depth, and everything just blends together beautifully.

Grandeur gets incredibly close, but Black Opium still has that little bit of magic that makes me keep reaching for it non-stop.

Staying power

This is where the gap becomes pretty obvious.

YSL Black Opium lasts on my skin for hours and hours. Even after a full day out, I can still catch little whiffs of it on myself. Sometimes I can even smell it on my clothes the next few days.

Grandeur Optimum Noir isn't bad by any means. It gives me a decent wear time and easily gets me through several hours before I feel like topping it up.

But when they're side by side, YSL wins without much competition. If longevity is something you care about, Black Opium is still in a league of its own.

Sillage

Another area where YSL takes the crown.

Black Opium has beautiful projection without being overwhelming. People notice it, you leave a subtle scent trail, and somehow it still feels elegant rather than loud.

Grandeur stays much closer to the skin. People standing near you will still smell it, but it doesn't have the same presence or lasting trail that Black Opium is known for.

Again, it's perfectly decent for everyday wear, but it doesn't quite give me that “wow, what perfume are you wearing?” moment as often.

Is Grandeur Optimum Noir worth buying?

Honestly... yes.

If you've always loved the scent of YSL Black Opium but don't want to spend luxury perfume money, Grandeur Optimum Noir is one of the better alternatives I've tried. The resemblance is genuinely impressive, especially during the first few hours.

That said, after wearing Black Opium for years, I still don't think it's a complete replacement.

The scent is almost identical, but Black Opium simply performs better. It lasts longer, projects better, and has a richness that makes the whole experience feel more luxurious from start to finish.

So while Grandeur is a fantastic budget-friendly option, YSL Black Opium still reminds me why it's earned its cult-favourite status.

Final thoughts

If I had to choose only one, I'd still pick YSL Black Opium every single time. For obvious reasons.

Not because Grandeur Optimum Noir isn't good—it really is—but because perfume is more than just smelling similar. Performance matters too, and that's where YSL continues to justify its reputation. I'd happily buy YSL over and over again.

That said, if you're looking for a perfume that captures a very similar vibe without the luxury price tag, Grandeur Optimum Noir is absolutely worth considering! Just don't expect it to outperform the original.
